s historical challenge to state power would still have resonance among Americans. The breakneck escalation of policies targeting immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in the administration's first year answered that question with sobering clarity. As requests for historical context and public commentary mounted month after month, it became clear that sanctuary's story was not finished. This book is our effort to situate the present crisis within a longer history of faith, resistance, and the stubborn insistence that welcoming the stranger remains both a moral mandate and a political act. Many hands went into making this book possible. The genesis of this project owes to the genius of Brad Onishi, consummate commentator on all things politics and religion. Along with Kari Onishi and Scott Okamoto, the production team at Axis Mundi Media, Brad offered us the opportunity to try out some of our ideas behind the mic in early 2024; the result was a limited-edition podcast series, Sanctuary: On the Border Between Church and State, which served as an inspiration for this book's narrative arc. As fellows of the Public Religion Research Institute, we benefited from the training for public scholarship and support of the staff as well as our fellow "Immigration Pod" member Anita Huizar-Hernandez"-- Provided by publisher.
