ups of Indigenous Americans who lived in the South. But the story of the South, as we think of it today, began with the arrival of English settlers in 1607. The lands of the north and south began gradually to organize into states. After the War of 1812, the nation expanded even more rapidly. In 1821, there were twenty-four states in the Union. By 1861, when the Civil War broke out, there were thirty-four. In the South, the antebellum period's aspects had been presented positively in popular movies and books. However, such presentations as "Gone with the Wind" often ignore the evil of slavery and the times' complex political and social realities. The antebellum period came to an end with the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861.
In "Gone with the Wind, " we visit a fictional family of the early pre-Civil War days in the Old South. However, in this writing, we see non-fictional families who immigrated to this country and migrated to and lived in the Old South. We follow their descendants who never achieved fame on the movie screen but were important in early American history.
