As the voice of Frederick Davidson (David Case) drones on, the reviewer wonders what this long book adds to the sum of human knowledge. Educated Americans will find most of the topics familiar--the book is a review, not a blaze of intellectual light. The author chunks the years into packages featuring general topics, most often restricted to a limited time period. The topics include ideas--Freud, Nazism, Communism--as well as regions and nations. Davidson's dry, sly, British intonations are ok for a book without dialogue or excitement. A few mispronunciations distract from the presentation. D.R.W. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine--
