oughout my career, I’ve worked at several Fortune 100 companies across industries like telecommunications, finance, utilities, and professional services.
I began coding the year before Y2K, so you can probably guess my age.
I was part of a development team that once released a software update causing all debit and ATM transactions to be declined for three hours at a major bank. Imagine being on a 3 a.m. call, troubleshooting code while several Directors, who reported directly to the CEO, were shouting, “You have 10 minutes to figure this out, or I’m firing all of you!” It may sound harsh, but the company was losing millions of dollars every hour, along with customers and reputation. The issue was found in vendor code so a quick patch from the vedor fixed it and grandma could go back to informercial shopping. Suffice to say, I know what it’s like to be under pressure.
I’ve also demoed software to a potential client who gave our team little more than an hour of courtesy. On the line? A potential $5.5 million change order. My code, my presentation, and the internet connection all had to be flawless. Needless to say, I charmed them, and we closed the deal.
I’ve worked with all types, volumes, and velocities of data—from streaming data that arrived at a blistering 4,000 transactions per second to 8-petabyte deep storage archives that needed to be migrated to the cloud.
I’ve interviewed, hired, and fired dozens of data engineers, so I know what matters on a resume, what to say (and what not to say) in an interview, and how to move from a junior to a senior data engineer in record time.
