E. Purely external. I am aware that the date to which I as sign this play will probably give rise to more or less controversy; but at the same time there is no one who can prove that T in Taming of the Shrew was in existence prior to 1607. Two years ago I should not have ventured to de clare the older comedy to be the production of Shakespeare; but a critical study of the play has convinced me that it was rightly assigned to him by that forgotten commentator, Edward Capell.
