resemble workbook pages as users drill and practice in beginning and ending sounds, short and long vowel sounds, antonyms, and alphabetical order. There is immediate feedback for both correct and incorrect answers. Users are given the chance to correct mistakes. Success is rewarded with colorful cartoon celebrations. Youngsters are also given "recess" breaks after every other activity where they may play simple games. The program keeps track of each user's progress so that they may return to the same point when they return to the software again. Print options include some activities and progress reports, as well as a final certificate. The written and oral instructions make the CD-ROM is very easy to use. Both mouse and keyboard are used. While the program is designed for first-graders, it also would work for younger children who know their letter sounds, and for older children who need review. It might also prove valuable for use with ESL students because of its phonics base. For those who prefer written work, the CD-ROM comes with an actual workbook that students can use for additional review. The strengths of this CD-ROM lie in its appealing and colorful graphics and in its ease of use. It clearly states its mission and then follows through. Although the games are fun, they don't help reinforce the skills taught. There certainly is a place for drill and practice in an educational setting, and this program is more appealing than a standard workbook.Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.
