ovides many opportunities to associate Web objects such as HTML documents with robot agents (a.k.a. Java objects) that produce them. Following data from the client browser to the Web server to the servlet helps students understand how the interaction occurs between servlets and the Web server. This then helps them understand about writing objects that just extend existing classes to carry out the task they need. The quick chapter on Perl (Chapter 10) exposes students to the basic elements of the langauge. Students can then read legacy Perl scripts that are part of most Web sites currently. Using Perl as a bridge, Avila shows how Java can be leveraged (Chapter 11) to work with the older CGI technology in situations where servlets may not be available.
