scene. Not just one fire but dozens, each one burning hot and bright, but thanks to the damp forest floor, they were not spreading. He immediately got to work with his shovel and ax. Only minutes later the other three firefighters arrived; one noticed the large crater. With the little fires extinguished, the men gathered around the crater and scattered debris.
“What do you think?” Razz asked.
“A bomb.”
“What? No!”
“Yeah. As I recall, you reported loud noises and a plane in the area a little after 0600.”
“I did,” Razz agreed. “Couldn't make it out, but not long after I saw the smoke.”
“A goddamn bomb!”
“Who in the hell would bomb the forest?”
One of the other firefighters stepped down into the crater. He hefted up a rounded chunk of metal, slightly melted from the extreme heat. “Well, we are at war with Japan.”
“Japan bombed the United States?” Questioned Razz.
“Who else? There's enough stuff here to have set fire to all of Curry County.”
