कहानी का मजा पढ़ने में नहीं, उसके सुनने तथा सुनाने में है। सुनाई जानेवाली कहानियाँ ही अधिक रसमय लगती हैं। राजस्थान में कहानी-कथन की चार शैलियों में कथा-कथन, कथा-वाचन, कथा-गायन तथा कथा-नर्तन जैसी शैलियाँ प्रमुख रही हैं। कहानी चाहे कोई कहता हो, उसका हुंकारा अवश्य दिया जाता है। सुनने वालों में से किसी के द्वारा हुंकारा ‘हूँ’ कहकर दिया जाता है। हुंकारा देनेवाले को ‘हुंकारची’ कहते हैं। हुंकारा कहानी में जान लाता है और उसकी कथन-रफ्तार को बनाए रखता है।
