On Love is a philosophical discourse by French author Stendhal, first published in 1822. This edition features the English translation by Cecil & Philip Sidney Woolf. Inspired by Stendhal's unrequited love for Métilde Dembowski, this insightful and radical work is written in two parts.
The first part provides an analysis of love in which Stendhal lists four different kinds of love - physical, social, vanity and passionate - and details seven stages of love, from admiration to “crystallization”. The second part reveals his views in opposition to marriage and supporting the full education and moral freedom of women.
