Ivan Goncharov (1812-1891) was a Russian novelist, best known for his novels A Common Story (1847), Oblomov (1859), and The Precipice (1869). While Goncharov has not achieved the same level of fame as some of his Russian contemporaries, he was highly influential on the development of 19th century literature, held in high esteem by Dostoyevsky and Chekhov.
