John Flavel, Puritan pastor to the sailors, wrote this little book of Christian meditations on life on the sea. The chapters are short, much like a modern daily book of devotions, and each chapter shows the depth of Flavel's theological thought. Each chapter concludes with a short poem, which by themselves make this book a treasure. The book is a master class in pastoral application and exhortation. Preachers would do well to consider how they might speak in so targeted a manner to their congregations.
