्ष पद पर रहे। सन् 1941 में पी-एच.डी. तथा सन् 1946 में डी.लिट्.। सन् 1946 से 1951 तक सेंट्रल एशियन एक्टिविटीज म्यूजियम के सुपरिंटेंडेंट और भारतीय पुरातत्त्व विभाग के अध्यक्ष पद का कार्य; सन् 1951 में काशी हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय के कॉलेज ऑफ इंडोलॉजी (भारती महाविद्यालय) में प्रोफेसर नियुक्त हुए। वे भारतीय मुद्रा परिषद् नागपुर, भारतीय संग्रहालय परिषद् पटना और ऑल इंडिया ओरिएंटल कांग्रेस, फाइन आर्ट सेक्शन बंबई आदि संस्थाओं के सभापति
भी रहे।
रचनाएँ : उनके द्वारा लिखी और संपादित कुछ प्रमुख पुस्तकें हैं—‘उरु-ज्योतिः’, ‘कला और संस्कृति’, ‘कल्पवृक्ष’, ‘कादंबरी’, ‘मलिक मुहम्मद जायसी : पद्मावत’, ‘पाणिनिकालीन भारतवर्ष’, ‘पृथिवी-पुत्र’, ‘पोद्दार अभिनंदन ग्रंथ’, ‘भारत की मौलिक एकता’, ‘भारत सावित्री’, ‘माता भूमि’, ‘हर्षचरित : एक सांस्कृतिक अध्ययन’, राधाकुमुद मुखर्जीकृत ‘हिंदू सभ्यता’ का अनुवाद। डॉ. मोती चन्द्र के साथ मिलकर ‘शृंगारहाट’ का संपादन किया; कालिदास के ‘मेघदूत’ एवं बाणभट्ट के ‘हर्षचरित’ की नवीन पीठिका प्रस्तुत की।
