लाजपतराय स्वप्नदर्शी नहीं थे। उन्होंने जिन योजनाओं की रूपरेखा बनाई, उन्हें पूर्ण करने के लिए अपना जीवन अर्पित कर दिया। लालाजी शांतिपूर्ण उपायों से स्वराज्य-प्राप्ति के लिए प्रयत्नशील रहे। लेकिन उन्होंने आतंक और अत्याचार के सामने कभी सिर नहीं झुकाया।
लालाजी राष्ट्रीय विचारों के प्रणेता थे। उनके लिए पूर्ण स्वराज्य आदर्श था और धर्म भी। सामाजिक जीवन में फैली निराशा और विकृत मनोवृत्तियों को समाप्त करने के उद्देश्य से लालाजी ने आर्यसमाज का आश्रय ग्रहण किया। उन्होंने शोषण को किसी रूप में स्वीकार नहीं किया, शोषण चाहे ब्रिटिश शासन का हो अथवा सबल जाति का निर्बल के प्रति। लालाजी शिक्षा को राष्ट्रीय स्वरूप देना चाहते थे। उनके अनुसार शिक्षा का प्रथम उद्देश्य स्वतंत्रता की अनुभूति कराना होना चाहिए।
