कथन की परंपरा विलुप्त होती नजर आ रही है। भूत, राक्षस, डायन, शैतान आदि की कहानियाँ तो महाराष्ट्र में विपुल मात्रा में पाई जाती हैं। भूतों के बारे में समाज-मानस में एक लोकभावना अवश्य होती है। लेकिन कहानियों के अंत में हम पाते हैं कि मनुष्य की ही विजय होती है और ये नकारात्मक शक्तियाँ हार जाती हैं। अपना अज्ञान और डर, यही भूतों की कहानियों का मूल होता है। लेकिन किसी-किसी कहानियों में भूतों को उपकारी भी बताया गया है। महाराष्ट्र के ग्रामीण इलाकों में सभी के मुख से कहानी, कानी अथवा कायनी ऐसे शब्द अवश्य निकलते हैं। इन कहानियों में बहुत बार आटपाट नामक एक नगर अवश्य होता था। संस्कृत भाषा में ‘अट्ट’ इस शब्द का अर्थ होता है—बाजार। ‘पाट’ का अर्थ—रास्ता अथवा मार्ग, ऐसा भी लिया जाता है, अर्थात् जहाँ बहुत बड़ा बाजार और बडे़-बडे़ रास्ते हैं, ऐसी सुख-सुविधाओं से युक्त नगर होता था—आटपाट नगर। कहानी सुनानेवाला मनुष्य कई गुणों से युक्त होता था। कथा-कथन की कुशलता उसमें कूटकर भरी होगी तो ही इस कहानी में रंग उतरता था।
