Pontus Hultén (1924 2006) was a visionary curator who radically transformed the relationship between art, museums, and society. Founder of the Moderna
...
Museet, the Centre Pompidou, and MoCA, he brought art out of traditional museum walls and into everyday life. Less known is his work in graphic design, which reveals an experimental and anarchistic dimension. For Hultén, every printed object catalogue, poster, invitation had its own identity and was meant to reflect both its content and its creator, becoming a mediator of the invisible. His playful, inventive approach also carried a critique of capitalism, visible throughout a collection of around 200 graphic objects. This work is presented in a book resulting from ten years of research by graphic designer Stina Gromark. The book is organized thematically rather than chronologically and includes writings by Hultén, a text by art historian Ron Hunt, and an interview with Lutz Jahre. The book s design embodies Hultén s philosophy: each element format, paper, printing techniques is chosen to resonate with the subject and today s context. The book is released in conjunction with the exhibition Keep Smiling! The Printed Universe of Pontus Hultén at the Institut Suédois in Paris.
