Cinderella stories among quarterbacks in the NFL are very few and far between. Most every star passer in the game has come from a distinguished background. Even if they did not grow up in a great childhood, they were high school and college stars with high aspirations and illustrious promise. The story of Josh Allen, however, is unique. He grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere in California, and the nearest town was some 30 minutes away. He showed promise as a passer in high school, but hardly anyone wanted him. He had to play for a community college first before the University of Wyoming gave him a call and asked him to come aboard.
Even then, the chances of Allen getting to the pro level were nearly remote. Only three other quarterbacks in the game’s history were drafted out of Wyoming, and none of them were picked in the first five rounds, and only one came after 1960. But Josh Allen wanted to defy the odds and do something that no said believed he could do. He went to Wyoming and stunned scouts, throwing for just under 5,000 yards and 44 touchdowns in two seasons. He set many single-season records at the school, but people still doubted him because of where he came from. He gained the reputation of a mobile gun-slinger with a big arm and exquisite leadership qualities, but NFL teams still doubted him because of his background. With his kind of talent, he would typically be a surefire top-five pick in the NFL Draft, but rumors swirled about his lack of playing big-time competition and tendencies to be inaccurate.
