सी, किस्सा तोतामैना तथा सिंहासनबत्तीसी के कथानक इसमें समेट लिये, वहीं भारतीय परंपराओं और संस्कृति को प्रस्तुत किया है। कश्मीर के राजा अनंतदेव के शासन काल में सोमदेव ने इसकी रचना रानी सूर्यमती के कहने पर 1070 ई. में की थी।
