Lyons is a pleasure to read because he so admirably re-creates the essence of angling: the meditative rhythm of casting, the burst of adrenaline when ... a fish strikes, the quiet joy of standing in a river. He recounts delightful stories of eccentric fishermen, heroic successes and abysmal failures, treacherous streams, and particularly wily fish that elude even the cleverest angler's schemes. It is clear throughout that Lyons is possessed of that deep passion for a sport that so often turns.
