Sneak Peak
I continued walking in this manner for some time, endeavouring by bodily exercise to ease the load that weighed upon my mind. I traversed the streets without any clear conception of where I was or what I was doing. My heart palpitated in the sickness of fear, and I hurried on with irregular steps, not daring to look about me:
Like one who, on a lonely road,
Doth walk in fear and dread,
And, having once turned round, walks on,
And turns no more his head;
Because he knows a frightful fiend
Doth close behind him tread.
Synopsis
Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus is an all-time classic. This is a frame story written in epistolary form It documents a fictional correspondence between Captain Robert Walton and his sister, Margaret Walton Saville. The story takes place in the eighteenth century. Robert Walton is a failed writer who sets out to explore the North Pacific Ocean in hopes of expanding scientific knowledge. During the voyage, the crew spots a dog sled driven by a gigantic figure. A few hours later, the crew rescues a nearly frozen and emaciated man named Victor Frankenstein. Frankenstein has been in pursuit of the gigantic man observed by Walton's crew. Frankenstein starts to recover from his exertion; he sees in Walton the same obsession that has destroyed him and recounts a story of his life's miseries to Walton as a warning. The recounted story serves as the frame for Frankenstein's narrative. A Science and Fantasy of us and them , and must read title.
On the surface, it is a story of tension and slowly increasing terror; a Swiss student of natural science makes a counterfeit man out of body fragments and brings his creation to life. Though it wants affection at first, the creature instills fear in everyone who comes into contact with it. Lonely and despondent, the monster turns on its creator, who finally dies.But, on a deeper level, it offers probing illumination of the human condition in its depiction of a scientist who oversteps the boundaries of conscience, and of a monster brought to life in an alien environment, ever more frantically striving to escape the torment of his solitary.
