chen has developed her own system for teaching reading. Using Five Minute Phonics children have learned to read much more quickly than with other methods. Originally designed for parents and tutors, the program is easily adaptable for the classroom. EXCERPT:Only Five Minutes! Are You Kidding? Not at all! This book was originally written for teaching children who had started life addicted to cocaine. These children not only have shorter attention spans than most children but are easily discouraged as well. They need to be successful right away. While these children did much better than anyone expected them to do, I soon noticed that there was a great need for such a method elsewhere. For example, in the summer when normal school children were attending the same program, I noticed that most of them couldn't read as well as my "crack babies." It was also obvious that many parents, in spite being cautioned against it by child development experts, are actively teaching their young children to read. A pleasant and stress-free, easy to use, short but effective program is needed. This reading program meets those requirements. It is also an excellent supplement to early school work. Her quest to find the best materials available has resulted in her writing her own program. Five Minute Phonics enables her students to learn phonics much more quickly than with other methods. Because the lessons are short and presented in small increments with lots of review, they are suitable for students who find traditional phonics difficult. While Five Minute Phonics works best with five and six year olds, it has been used successfully with both preschoolers and older children. (cover) Pedro lives on a nearby ranch where his father works. When Pedro was in kindergarten and first grade, his parents brought him to my house two or three times a week for lessons. I honored Pedro's request for "not a long lesson" by using the same materials presented in this book. At the time of this picture, Pedro was in second grade and reading very well.
