ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ashok Sinha’s remarkable journey began in the coal-rich jungles of India, where he was home-schooled before completing just 12 years of formal education. During this time, he earned two bachelor’s degrees, including one from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore (now Bengaluru). ranking First in the First class all four possible times and winning six gold medals. By the age of 22, he had completed his Ph.D. (D. Phil.) at Oxford University, followed by a research fellowship at Caltech in Pasadena, California.
Ashok’s career spanned pivotal leadership roles in the semiconductor industry. He headed the VLSI Technology and Fabrication Departments at Bell Labs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, served as Vice President of Manufacturing Technology Development at SEMATECH in Austin, Texas, and rose to Senior Vice President at Applied Materials in Santa Clara, California, where he managed a $6 billion product portfolio.
At 65, Ashok founded and led Sunpreme as Chairman and CEO, establishing it as a global leader in PV Solar and Module manufacturing. With a wholly owned factory in Jiaxing, China, Sunpreme pioneered innovative heterojunction cells, bifacial dual glass modules, and smart integrated optimizers, reaching customers in 28 countries.
Retiring at 75, Ashok remains active in the field, delivering a virtual keynote on Artificial Intelligence for semiconductors at an IEEE summit. His prolific contributions include 80 U.S. patents, over 100 publications and book chapters, a monograph, and two books. An IEEE Fellow, he has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Distinguished Alumni Medal from IISc and the Clinton J. Davisson Trophy from AT&T Bell Labs.
