ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A harrowing testimony about the Nazi horror, overcoming, and atonement, by one of the world's leading experts in psychiatry.
"Something terrible is happening: the past is erupting; my two lives, day and night, are coming together. I need to talk."
An old friend from Irvin Yalom's medical school days is urgently asking for his help. In their fifty years of friendship, Bob Berger had never shared his night terrors with his close friend. However, now he feels compelled to do so: the only survivor of a Hungarian family of Jewish origin, Berger managed to escape the Nazis at seventeen and exiled to the United States, where he eventually became a prestigious cardiothoracic surgeon. Since then, his life has unfolded on two levels: one by day, as a recognized professional and family man, and another by night, where fragments of that terrible past have been seeping into his dreams. For five decades, he had never confessed the darkness that tormented him to anyone. Now, however, he is compelled to share this great secret with Yalom. After a life defined by atonement and repression, a dangerous encounter has triggered the painful memory of those years. To heal, Yalom and Berger must interpret the fragments of the past and make the present a reality again.
This is a magnificent story about silence, repression, and memory, as well as a powerful example of how friendship can heal us.
Irvin Yalom, one of the greatest experts in the human mind, shares in this fascinating work a wonderful story of overcoming and bravery.
