many books and articles discuss the causes and symptoms of dementia, there is far less emphasis on practical advice for caregivers.
If you decide on home care, it’s essential to be prepared. You need to do your own research, educate yourself, and learn the necessary skills—both for your own well-being and for that of your loved one. By doing so, you can become more effective and better equipped to handle the challenges that arise.
The book gives a brief definition of dementia and then describes the causes and typical symptoms. These are followed by details of the physical and psychological problems, and then their solutions. At the end of the book, there is a discussion of activities in the home or even in a group setting and 'carer care'. There is also a discussion of early detection and prevention and possible accidents. Frequently asked questions are answered at the end of the book.
I have been a carer for more than ten years, providing care, support and assistance to people with dementia. In the course of my work, I have seen how important and useful it would be to create a book of practical advice to help relatives or carers to find concrete solutions to specific problems. Without effective help, family relationships can break down, the good relationship that has existed up to now can turn into a difficult, nerve-wracking situation, negative attitudes can develop with damaging consequences for both the patient and the carer.
