Corky Corcoran also had the intangibles that were harder to find and impossible to teach-on-the-air she became everybody's daughter, best friend, and sweetheart. Viewers loved what Corky brought to their living rooms, and as a result, sales managers worshipped her-the rate card at WTVR was 20% higher for Corky's segment of the news. Through hard work and tenacity, Corky bulldozed her way into a truly enviable spot in the broadcast industry.
The Jungle Daughter is the story of a successful news correspondent who made the radical career adjustment to follow Jesus Christ. Exchanging her fame in the newsroom for obscurity in the jungle, Corky volunteered at an outreach in Corazal, Quintana Roo, Mexico in the Yucatan peninsula. The assignment was for two weeks, the young woman never came back.
Corazal was a village of adobe huts, oil lamps, brick ovens, outhouses and a community cistern. Electricity hadn't reached the people yet. Corazal was Corky Corcoran's venue now, her divine stage. Before the heavens were formed, the Lord ordained a work for the young woman, a work Corky discovered was far more significant than anything she did before a camera.
The Jungle Daughter is set in a world of patriarchal values that went back generations. It also looks at the extravagances of many American nonprofits, and steps inside the tenuous relationship between posh Mexican resorts and the indigenous people living in their shadows.
Mostly this is the story of a young woman who gave herself to the people of Corazal, Quintana Roo, and in the process became one of them. The Jungle Daughter.
