रमन ने ध्वनिक, पराध्वनिक, प्रकाशिकी, चुंबकत्व, स्फटिक भौतिकी आदि कई क्षेत्रों में मौलिक अनुसंधान किए। भारतीय वाद्ययंत्रों पर रमन ने गहन अध्ययन किया। रमन एक प्रख्यात वैज्ञानिक ही नहीं, बल्कि स्वप्नद्रष्टा भी थे। विज्ञान से सचमुच प्यार करते थे। उन्होंने विज्ञान के माध्यम से देश की प्रगति का सपना देखा था। आम जनता में विज्ञान के प्रति जागरूकता पैदा करने के लिए वे अकसर सभाओं का आयोजन करते थे, जिसमें वह विज्ञान के क्षेत्र में हुए शोध के बारे में विस्तार से बताते थे।
रमन को भारत सरकार ने देश के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान ‘भारत रत्न’ से सम्मानित किया था।
