Description
"This is a comprehensive text that provides evidence-based examination of the contentious debates surrounding the practice of Female Genital Mutilatio
...
n (FGM) across global communities. It employs rigorous statistical analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data to address the most controversial aspects of FGM. The author systematically explores the multifaceted dimensions of this harmful practice through nine focused chapters. Beginning with a methodological framework, the book examines FGM as an adverse childhood experience before investigating the complex intersectionality between socioeconomic factors, women's empowerment status, and cultural determinants that perpetuate the practice. It challenges common misconceptions by analyzing whether religion, ethnicity, or regional factors serve as primary drivers, identifying specific hotspots where FGM remains prevalent. The book also examines FGM's impact on women's sexuality, the concerning trend of medicalization, and the interrelationship between FGM and intimate partner violence. The final chapters provide a comprehensive analysis of FGM's effects on women's reproductive and general health, supported by illustrative case studies. This book serves as an invaluable resource for public health professionals, policymakers, researchers, activists, and healthcare providers working to eliminate FGM globally"-- Provided by publisher.
