रता का शांत विरोध लोगों के धैर्य की परीक्षा ले रहा था। हथियार उठाने की भगत सिंह की अपील युवाओं को प्रेरित कर रही थी और उनके साथ ही हिंदुस्तान सोशलिस्ट रिपब्लिकन एसोसिएशन की सैन्य शाखा के कॉमरेड मिलकर सुखदेव और राजगुरु की ललकार तथा दिलेरी उनमें जोश भर रही थी। ‘इनकलाब जिंदाबाद!’ का जो नारा उन्होंने दिया था, वह स्वतंत्रता की लड़ाई का जयघोष बन गया।
लाहौर षड्यंत्र केस में भगत सिंह के शामिल होने को लेकर मुकदमे का ढोंग चला और जब तेईस वर्ष की उम्र में, अंग्रेजों ने भगत सिंह को फाँसी दे दी, तब भारतीयों ने उनकी शहादत को उनकी जवानी, उनकी वीरता, और निश्चित मृत्यु के सामने अदम्य साहस के लिए पूजना शुरू कर दिया। इसके कई वर्षों बाद, 1947 में स्वतंत्रता मिलने पर, जेल में उनके लिखे लेख सामने आए। आज, इन लेखों के कारण ही भगत सिंह ऐसे कई क्रांतिकारियों से अलग दिखते हैं, जिन्होंने अपना जीवन भारत के लिए बलिदान कर दिया।
