मिस्टर तालुकदार उनकी बगल में ही मौजूद थे। इसके बावजूद प्रतुल नहीं माना।
‘ये मिस्टर तालुकदार क्या हमारे स्टाफ हैं? ये तो सरकारी इंस्पेक्टर हैं। इन्हें तो सरकार से ही तनख्वाह मिलती है। हम इनको रुपए क्यों दें?’
मिस्टर बासु ने कहा; ‘ये जो हर हफ्ते सर्टिफिकेट पर दस्तखत कर जाते हैं। इसी बाबत इन्हें हर हफ्ते दो सौ रुपए नकद दिए जाते हैं।’
प्रतुल चौंक गया; ‘तो इसे घूस कहें न!’
‘नहीं; यह घूस नहीं है।’ मिस्टर बासु ने विरोध के लहजे में जवाब दिया।
प्रतुल गुस्से में भर उठा; ‘घूस को घूस न कहूँ तो और क्या कहूँ?’
इतनी देर बाद मिस्टर तालुकदार ने जुबान खोली; ‘लेकिन अगर मैं सारी दवाएँ चेक करके सर्टिफिकेट दूँ तो आप लोगों की कंपनी क्या चलेगी?’
