े झारखंड आंदोलन के बहाने संपूर्ण आदिवासी विश्व पर लिखा। ऐसा कोई भी आयाम उससे अछूता नहीं रहा; जिस पर उसने विचार-मंथन नहीं किया; कलम नहीं चलाई। चाहे वह फिलीपीन के आदिवासियों का संघर्ष हो या लातीन अमेरिकी आदिवासियों अथवा अमेरिकी रेड इंडियनों की लड़ाइयाँ—उसने देश के सुदूर दक्षिण पाल्लियार आदिम आदिवासियों की कथा लिखी; तो बस्तर और सोनभद्र की कहानियाँ भी लोगों तक पहुँचाईं। झारखंड उसके लेखन के मुख्य केंद्र में था ही। आदिवासी सवालों पर लिखते हुए सामू ने न सिर्फ भारतीय शासक वर्गों की मौजूदा नीतियों; कार्यक्रमों और विकासीय परियोजनाओं पर तीखे प्रहार किए और उनकी अमानवीय-अप्राकृतिक दोहन-मंशा को परत-दर-परत उधेड़ा; बल्कि ऐतिहासिक दृष्टि से उस सांस्कृतिक-दार्शनिक द्वंद्व को भी रखा; जिसे आर्य-अनार्य संघर्ष के रूप में दुनिया जानती है। इस अर्थ में वह हिंदी का पहला आदिवासी सिद्धांतकार है; जिसने आदिवासियत के आलोक में; आदिवासी विश्वदृष्टि के नजरिए से पूँजीलोलुप समाज-सत्ता के दर्शन पर चोट की। उसने बताया कि यह व्यवस्था लुटेरी और हत्यारी है तथा यह आदिवासी क्या; किसी भी आम नागरिक को कोई बुनियादी सुविधा और मौलिक अधिकारों के उपभोग का स्वतंत्र अवसर नहीं देने जा रही; क्योंकि विकास की उनकी अवधारणा उसी नस्लीय; धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक सोच की देन है; जिसमें आदिवासियों; स्त्रियों; दलितों और समाज के पिछड़े तबकों के लिए कभी कोई जगह नहीं रही है।
