y. Through journal entries and reflections, this book offers a glimpse into our lives during those two years.
Life throws us into battles we never imagined, testing our strength and resolve. This book is born from such a battle—a journey my son, Sam Safken, and I undertook when he was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma cancer at just 18 years old. For nearly two years, we faced a grueling fight, marked by hope, despair, and an unbreakable bond. Sam succumbed to cancer on September 19th, 2005, but his spirit and wishes have kept me going ever since.
At the suggestion of a nurse, Sam and I started keeping journals early in his treatment. We recorded our raw, honest feelings—his as a young man grappling with a devastating illness, and mine as a mother watching her son suffer. Some days, we poured our hearts out; other days, we could barely write a word. But those journals became our lifeline.
Before he passed, Sam made me promise to finish our story. He believed it would help others, showing that even in the darkest times, there is light. He wanted people to understand that bad things can happen to good people, and that kindness and love can endure beyond pain and loss.
